FamilySearch and the Italian National Archives are digitizing more than 115 million images of historic birth, marriage and death records of the Italian civil registration records.
Your help as an online indexing volunteer will make these records easily searchable online for free. The completed indexes will become part of the most significant and relevant collection of records for Italian genealogical research. Thanks for helping us make Italian History!
Italian records were standardized after 1875. This website will show you how to navigate and index these post 1875 historic records. There are seven basis elements you will extract from the birth record: record number, year, birth date, child's name, father's name and mother's name.
In death records, you will index the record number, date of death, the deceased's name, the comune of birth, the father's name, the mother's name and the name of the spouse, if there is one.
It is recommended that you start with either birth or death records and continue until you feel comfortable. Then you can try the other type. Once you are familiar with both, it is easy to switch back and forth.
If you look at the tabs on the side of this page you will find instructions on how to set up your account and how to change your preferences to help you find Italian records. There are tabs for each of the items you will need to index. They will explain where to look on the form to find the item as well as any special words or phrases you should be looking for. There is also a step by step guide to walk you through an Italian record and a guide to help you with the irregularities you will come across as you index these vital records.
The tab, "Help with Italian Indexing" is a place for you to post your questions. Anyone who accesses this blog can post questions or answer questions posted by others. We will monitor it daily and provide answers as well.
